6 questions about boudoir photography you're afraid to ask

June 3, 2018

Even if it’s something you’ve long thought about doing, finally scheduling your first boudoir photography session can be a bit scary. Chances are, you have a lot of questions that you might feel embarrassed to ask. Every shoot I do is an experience as individual as you are, but many of the pre-shoot questions remain the same.

Do I have to get naked? Absolutely not! How much or how little you want to reveal is totally up to you. It’s your photo shoot, and you must be comfortable. I do have experience shooting fine art nudes, so if you want to bare it all, we will work together to produce photos that are classy and tasteful. However, your wardrobe (or lack thereof) is your personal choice, and you can wear as little or as much as you like.

How will I get comfortable being scantily clad in front of a stranger? I’m not going to lie. It’s not unusual for my clients to feel nervous when it’s time to start shooting, but once we get going, I can usually watch the nervousness begin to melt away. I encourage my clients to wear outfits that cover the most skin first, and then we work our way towards those that are more revealing. By the time we’re done, we’ll both be laughing and having so much fun that you’ll forget about how nervous you were when you arrived.

How much personal grooming is involved? This is another one of those things that is totally your personal preference. I recommend waxing or shaving any areas that won’t be covered by your clothing. But don’t worry….if anything is not adequately covered in an image that you otherwise love, that’s what Photoshop is for.

Do I have to invent my own sexy poses? No, this is my job, and I love working with you to find the poses that make you feel comfortable and sexy, and that best flatter your body. My studio has different pieces of furniture and various backdrops and props that we’ll use to complement your wardrobe and your figure.

What about my “problem areas?” Will you Photoshop the parts of my body that I don’t love? Part of the boudoir photo experience is learning to love every part of your body. But if there’s a certain area that you feel insecure about, we can work together to pose you in ways that aren’t putting that area front and center. By maintaining an honest and open dialogue throughout your session, we can focus on highlighting the areas that you do love. I use the post-production process to complement the beauty that you already possess; I do not use it to change who you are.

Will my images appear on your web site and social media accounts? I promise to treat your images with the utmost privacy and discretion. They will not be publicized anywhere without your written consent.

I'd love to chat with you about other questions you have - you can always call, send me an email or message me on social media. mj
